IIT Kharagpur is situated about 120 km west of Kolkata. It may be reached by air, rail and road. Kharagpur can be reached in about 2 hours by train or 3 hours by car from Howrah railway station in Kolkata.
The nearest airport to Kharagpur is the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU), Kolkata.
From Kolkata Airport, one may take direct cab to Kharagpur, or a bus/cab to Howrah railway station (HWH) to avail trains to Kharagpur (KGP).
Kharagpur is well connected to most major cities of India by rail. There are two railway stations in Kharagpur: Kharagpur Junction (KGP) and Hijili (HIJ). Delhi bound trains stop at Hijili railway station(HIJ), which is situated right outside the IIT campus. Trains from rest of the places come to Kharagpur Junction (KGP), which is about 5 km from the IIT campus. Round the clock cab, auto-rickshaw and rickshaw services are available from both the railway stations.
Kharagpur is well connected to the nearby cities like Kolkata, Tatanagar (NH-06, Mumbai Kolkata Highway), Bubaneshwar, Cuttack (NH-16, Chennai Kolkata Highway) etc.
Cab services are available for local and limited outstation travel.
